Army Resolves Water Diversion Issue

Following initiatives taken by the Army, farmers as well as animals in drought-hit Lahugala and Panama areas are to receive water from the Muthukandi reservoir.

Farmers in Pottuvil, Lahugala and Panama sanctuary area pointed out that the prolonged drought continues to affect their farming and animal life and highlighted the need to divert a section of water to those areas, curtailing the daily quantum, being pumped to them three times a week.

However, the Army in the area convinced the farmers that more than 1000 acres in Lahugala and Pottuvil areas also remain badly affected due to drought and pointed out the need for redistribution of water earmarked for other areas, considering the prevailing pathetic situation. Farmers after discussions realized the need for diversion of a quantity of water to sanctuary areas too.

Colonel W.K Gunasoma, Commander, 632 Brigade after consultations with the Monaragala Irrigation Engineer and respective farming communities, got the consent of the public for this diversion of water.

The inaugural water release took place around 11.00 a.m on Monday (June 30) during a brief ceremony. Brigadier S.H.F.P Perera, Commander, Task Force III and several other state officials witnessed the occasion.
