Army Receives New Fleet of Heavy Machinery for Development Work

OVER one hundred of earth-moving machinery, bought by the Sri Lankan government from China were handed over to the Sri Lanka Army in a ceremony held at the Defence Ministry premises at Galle Face Saturday (26).

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya received twenty dozers, thirty seven motor graders, nine rollers, fourteen excavators and nineteen wheel loaders from the Senior Presidential Advisor and Parliamentarian Mr. Basil Rajapaksa on the occasion.

The value of the machinery has been estimated as Rs. 2353 million.

Those heavy vehicles will be employed by the Army troops presently engaged in government’s development programme in the north under “Uthuru Wasanthaya” programme.

Army troops are actively involved in road and other constructions in those areas in addition to humanitarian de-mining before the resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) takes place.

The ceremony at the Defence Ministry premises was attended by Senior Army and Ministerial officials.
 
New machinery are to be used by the Army troops for construction and renovation of roads, irrigational tanks and other infrastructure work in northern areas soon after they are taken to those areas.
