Sri Lanka Army Pugilists stole the limelight at the 97th National Boxing Championships organised by the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) and held at the iconic outdoor venue of Galle Face Green.
Over 130 Men and Women boxers from 25 clubs competed for honours in the 2024 edition of the nationals, held for 4 days of competition.
Sri Lanka Army Men's boxing team showcased their supremacy by clinching 9 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 3 bronze medals to emerge men's champions whilst the women's team clinched 3 Gold medals,5 Silver medals, and 3 bronze medals with the runners up title in the women's category.
Army boxers dominated the event, securing major awards, including the Sargent Selladorai Memorial Challenge Cup for the Champion Team, the Mauttaiyah Xavier Rose Memorial Challenge Cup for the Most Successful Team of the Year and the Best Boxer Men's Award, the Best Loser Men's Award and the Best Boxer Women's Award further solidifying their position.
Lance Corporal R.M.P Dharmasena was adjudged the Most Outstanding Boxer Men's Award and Bombodier M.M.L.P Jayawardena was adjudged the Best Loser Men's Award whilst Sargent S.H Priyadarshani was adjudged the Most Outstanding Boxer Women's Award of the tournament.
The Army boxing team showcased these remarkable performances under the guidance and supervision of Major General A.K Rajapakse RSP, Chairman of the Army Boxing Committee.
