Army Para Athletes Given Most Modern Incentives

Awarding a fillip for promotion of Para Athletics among members of the Army Para Athletic Committee who have shown exceptional skills both here and abroad, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, Commander of the Army gifted a stock of state-of-the-art eight artificial limbs and five most modern electric wheelchairs to the value of Rs 10 m after summoning Army Para Athletes to the Army Headquarters on Tuesday (22).

Those eight Para sportsmen during various foreign and local athletic events won accolades and made the Army proud inspite of their physical disabilities. Five similar wheelchair-ridden disabled sportsmen on the same occasion received sophisticated electric wheelchairs, instead of the ones they are currently using for different sports competitions.

The timely need, sensed by Directorate of Rehabilitation and Army Para Sports Committee was subsequently brought to the attention of the Commander of the Army in view of potential achievements that they could secure if they were to be provided with high standard accessories of this nature.

The brief ceremony was attended by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva as the Chief Guest, together with Major General Ubaya Medawela, Chief of Staff, Major General Channa Goonetilleke, Deputy Chief of Staff and Chairman, Army Para Sports Committee, Major General Boniface Perera, Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force and Principal Staff Officers, Brigadier S.K Thiruvanakarsu, Director Rehabilitation, Brigadier H Kulathunga, Commandant, Ranaviru Sevana, Ragama and a few other senior officers.

Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva extending his best wishes to the beneficiaries reminded them of the importance of shining in the world of para games as the world is getting more focused on this field.
