Army Organizes Distribution of Wheelchairs &;amp; Artificial Limbs for Jaffna Civilians

Nineteen differently-able civilians who needed attention and assistance of the society were recently provided wheelchairs and artificial limbs by the 511 Brigade at Achchuveli, Jaffna.

During a brief ceremony, held at the Headquarters of 9th Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry at Achchuveli, nine wheelchairs and ten artificial limbs were recently distributed among ten men and nine females. This donation, coordinated by the 511 Brigade was sponsored by “Centre for Handicapped”, a Kandy-based charity organization. 

 General Officer Commanding 51 Division Major General Janaka Walgama, Commander 511 Brigade Brigadier Keerthi Costa and Director, Officials of the “Centre for Handicapped” gave away those items. Hindu priests, a large crowd of civilians attended the occasion. 

This is a continuation of their donation programme which began in October 2010 after donating wheelchairs and artificial limbs for one hundred and sixty six civilians including children and the elderly. A stock of modern wheelchairs and artificial limbs worth over Rs. 5 million was distributed among the recipients last time when the civilians met at the Kopay Government Teachers’ College.
