Army Men & Women Swimmers Carry Away Overall Championship in 5 Km Open Water Swimming - 2018

Sri Lanka Army men and women swimmers secured the championship in the 5th annual 5 km Open Water Swimming Championship Ambalangoda - 2018, organized by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU) kicked off at Madampa river in Ambalangoda on Saturday (7).

The overall championship in both men's and women's categories was won by the Sri Lanka Army team securing individual first and second places in the male category. Further, 6 Army swimmers were among the first 10 achievers.

Corporal D.M Gunasena of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) secured the first place while Lance Corporal T.H.K.S.I De Silva of the SLSR won the second place in the men’s category.

26 Male and 8 Female Army swimmers representing the Army sports club participated in the tournament.

The SLASU has been instrumental in organizing this competitive sea swim for many years.

Major General Piyal Wickramaratne, Chairman, Army Aquatics Sports Committee who is also the Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) and the Colonel of the Regiment, Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) was behind the success of the tournament.

Colonel Clifford De Zoysa, Vice Chairman, Army Aquatics Sports Committee and a large gathering of Army and civil sector swimmers were at the venue to encourage competitors.
