Army marksmen and athletes to show colours at Olympics

The countdown for the 2004 Olympics in Greece has begun. Believe it or not, skilled men and women of the Sri Lanka Army will also contest their counterparts in High Jump, Marathon and Shooting events.

Warrant Officer (1) Pushpamali Ramanayake, Sri Lanka Army Women's Corps, a well-experienced marksman had attended the Olympics in 1992 & 1996. She also brought reputation to Sri Lanka Army early this year after securing one bronze medal and two silver medals at SAF games, held in Pakistan.

Sergeant M. A. I Cooray, 5th Sri Lanka Artillery, who had won one Gold at SAF games in Marathon this year, had represented the Army in a number of other encounters at national level. At Olympics 2004, Cooray will show his talents for the first time.

Private W. P Manjula Kumara, Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers is to join the High Jump contest in Greece. Making a new record in the South Asian region at SAF games, this athlete won a Gold Medal giving a tough resistance to his counterparts.

All those three contestants this morning, Friday 06 August, prior to their departure to Greece spoke to their boss, Commander of the Army, Lt. Gen S. H. S Kottegoda in his office and received his blessings for the journey. Lt. Gen Kottegoda exchanged views on experiences they had gathered in previous instances and assured his fullest cooperation for their future endeavours.

Sri Lanka Army Sports Officer Colonel F. M. A. W B. Padeniya and their coaches also met the Commander along with them.
