Sri Lanka Army Small Arms Committee Team, competed in the four-day long National Metallic Silhouette Shooting Championship tournament, held at the firing range, belonging to Negombo Rifle Association early this week, emerged the winners and carried the overall Championship trophy.
This was the Army’s first victory ever, recorded in a National Metallic Silhouette Shooting Championship Meet, competed by more than 135 shooters, drawn from all island-wide Rifle Shooting Associations, rifle shooters of tri-services and the Police Special Task Force during four days.
Single Championship in the tournament was secured by Corporal D.M Piyaratne of the Army’s Gemunu Watch.
Major E.A.T.S Daluwatta of 1 Gajaba Regiment (1 GR), on the instructions of Brigadier K.W Edema, Chairman, Army Small Arms Committee, himself a winner of international accolades in shooting, led the Army team to victory as the coach in the team.
Similarly, the Championship in the Light Rifle Shooting (women’s category) was clinched by 2 Lieutenant C.S. Weerakoon of Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) while Major E.A.T.S Daluwatta secured the third place in the Light Rifle Shooting event.
The ceremony for award of trophies took place on Sunday (27) amidst a large gathering of sportsmen and invitees. Mrs B.M.D.S Jayaratne, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Defence and Urban Development attended the closing ceremony as the chief guest.
Brigadier K.W Edema and several senior officers took part in the occasion.
