The thrilling Inter Regiment Motor Riding 2018 of the Army, organized by the Army Motor Racing Association for the second consecutive time got off the ground on Tuesday (27) at Saliyapura, Anuradhapura.
The overall Championship was won by the Sri Lanka Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (SLEME) Regiment and the Runners-up trophy was won by the Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR). The trophy for the Best Rider was awarded to L/CPL D.K Buddika Silva of the Sri Lanka Signals Corps (SLSC).
The most awaited event of the Army Motor Racing Association, competed by over a hundred of renowned Army motor riding enthusiasts drawn from SLA, SLSC, SLSR, GR, VIR, CES, SLASC, SLCMP and SLEME was witnessed by a large gathering of spectators on Tuesday (27).
The mammoth motor riding event organized for the 2nd time got underway under the guidance of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake and under the directions of Major General Darshana Hettiarrachchi, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Motor Racing Association.
Army riders competed in different motorcycle events for the trophy and the event got underway with the coordination of the Sri Lanka Army Motor Racing Association. A total of around 40 motorbike riders showed their skills and competed in the event.
Major General Ruwan De Silva, General Officer Commanding, 21 Division attended the event as the Chief Guest and awarded prizes and certificates to the winners at the invitation of the Sri Lanka Army Motor Racing Association.
The Motor Racing was introduced to the Army in 1991 and the Army has been practising this event by nurturing the skills and its experience to be on par with international standards.
As the German and Swedish engineers who came to construct the Kotmale and Randenigala dams under the Mahaweli project in 1980 showed a great interest in the Motor Racing. A Racing track was built near Kotmale dam in 1981 and racing events got underway afterwards.
