Army Inter-Regiment Chess Championship - 2024

The Army Inter-Regiment Chess Championship concluded on 25 October 2024 at the Regimental Centre, Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Panagoda. Players from 14 regiments showcased their exceptional skills competing in three events to claim championship title.

Major General S.W.B. Welagedara RSP VSV USP ndc, Director General Infantry and Chairman of the Sri Lanka Army Chess Committee, attended the finals as the Chief Guest and graced the awarding ceremony.

The overall Chess Championship was secured by the Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps, while the Engineers Service Regiment finished as runners-up.

Following a series of closely contested matches, the Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps emerged as the champions in the Men's Open Team Championship, while the Engineers Service Regiment secured the runners-up position. In the Women's Open Team Championship, the Sri Lanka Engineers won the title, with the Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps claiming the runner-up position.

Major General D.K.S.K. Dolage USP psc, Commandant of Defence Services Command and Staff College, Colonel M.M.M.P. Mahesh Kumara, Vice Chairman of the Sri Lanka Army Chess Committee, Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks, attended the thrilling finals and participated in the awarding ceremony.

Award Winners are as follows:

Open Individual:

- 1st Place: Corporal T.A.T. Madushanka, Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps

- 2nd Place: Second Lieutenant R.D.A.M. Suraweera, Corps of Engineer Services

- 3rd Place: Major A.A.B.D.P. Abeywardana, Sri Lanka Armoured Corps

Women Individual:

- 1st Place: Captain M.P.S. Polpitiya, Corps of Engineer Services

- 2nd Place: Sapper G.T.C. Samarasinghe, Sri Lanka Engineers

- 3rd Place: Sapper R.A.W.S. Ranasinghe, Sri Lanka Engineers

Men’s Blitz:

- 1st Place: Major A.A.B.D.P. Abeywardana, Sri Lanka Armoured Corps

- 2nd Place: Captain D.S.I. Siriwardana, Sri Lanka Engineers

- 3rd Place: Staff Sergeant H.K.G. Sampath, Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers

Women’s Blitz:

- 1st Place: Sapper G.T.C. Samarasinghe, Sri Lanka Engineers

- 2nd Place: Captain M.P.S. Polpitiya, Corps of Engineer Services

- 3rd Place: Corporal W.B.C. Bansara, Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps
