The first ever International Rating Team Chess Championship, organized by the Army Chess Committee in collaboration with the National Chess Federation of Sri Lanka began at the late Lieutenant Colonel D.B Rajasinghe auditorium of the Marksmanship and Sniper Training School (MSTS) at Diyatalawa on Friday (30).
The Chairman Army Chess Committee and the Commandant MSTS Brigadier Kithsiri Ekanayake opened the tournament with the participation of Army Chess Coach Mr Virochana Perera and Assistant Coach Mr Sanjula Ravinath.
This landmark event in the Army Sports Calendar 2019 is the first National Chess Championship ever held in Sri Lanka and will be in progress till 02 September 2019. 32 teams as mentioned below representing Tri-Services, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Univeersity, Sri Lanka Military Academy, National Universities and “Abhimansala” and “Ranaviru Sevana” are taking part in the Championship under different categories (Men and Women).
The grand awards ceremony of the championship will be held on 02 Sep 2019 at the ‘China- Sri Lanka Friendship’ Auditorium of the Sri Lanka Military Academy. Major General Mahinda Mudalige, Commander, Security Forces West as the Chief Guest along with Mr Meneaka Liyanage, Director Securatec (Pvt) Ltd and Mrs Sujatha Attanayaka as Special Guests.
