Army Hockey Team Does Well After 4 Decades


Sri Lanka Army Hockey team for the first time after absence of nearly 47 years, secured the first runners-up place at the National Hockey Tournament, held during the weekend (Nov 21-24) at Colombo Hockey grounds.

Sri Lanka Army Hockey team competing against 17 best island-wide teams in the tournament, beat Sri Lanka Schools’ team, Kandy Sports Club, Wennappuwa Sports Club and National Service Hockey Sports Club before the Quarter Finals were played against Matale Sports Club.  The Army team won 7 - 0.  

In the Semi Finals, the Army Hockey team played against the opposing Mercantile Sports Club and won, having secured a 4 - 2 victory.

However, in the final tussle on Sunday (24) evening against Sri Lanka Air Force team, the Army Hockey players underwent a tough and turbulent time and offered a neck and neck tussle.

Amidst applause and cheers, the Sri Lanka Air Force team won the match with a score of 5 - 2, pushing the Sri Lanka Army team, led by Corporal D.R.M.I.K Jayasundara of 4 Engineers Service Regiment, to be the first runner-up in the tournament. Mercantile Sports Club secured the third place.
