Army Engineers Gift 4-Storied Kidney Care Centre to Anuradhapura CKD Patients

More than 200 professionally and technically qualified Army Engineers of the 2 Corps of Engineer Services (CES), supported by fellow Navy and Air Force troops on Medin Full Moon Poya Day (20), bestowed the ‘Methsiri Sewana’, the 4-storied ‘Care, Welfare & Research’ Centre upon hundreds of kidney patients suffering in the North Central Province during a ceremonial opening, presided by HE the President Maithripala Sirisena, flanked by the Governor, Ministers, Commanders of the Army and the Navy.

The phenomenal construction undertaken by more than 200 plus Army engineers and technicians of the 2 CES Unit on the directions of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake began in earnest in 2016 in line with the Presidential Task Force (PTF) for Chronic Kidney Diseases (CKDs) after the Army Director Engineer Services evaluated the entire proposal for the construction and mobilized his troops within a few days.

The new facility building which has 23 beds and 2 wards, counseling room, research room and other medical facilities, fully functional with solar panels, supplies overnight accommodation for CKD patients arriving at Anuradhapura Hospital for dialysis and related treatment and was constructed at a cost of Rs 437 million, funds of which largely had been flowed from the President’s 2015 election fund, donors and other well-wishers.

Commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Chamal Mahendra, Project Manager & Commanding Officer, 2 Corps of Engineer Services (CES), Captain Nishantha Nanayakkara, Lieutenant J.B Suraweera, Lieutenant Piyumal Samarasekara and hundreds of energetic Other Rankers worked day and night tirelessly to bring it to completion to meet with the deadline, set out by the PTF for CKDs.

Wednesday’s ceremony gave away 2000 domestic water purification units to most affected areas and the President symbolized donating five of them to patients. At the same time, 200 diabetes testing equipment, 200 blood pressure testing equipment that can be used in Anuradhapura hospitals were also handed over to the North Central Province Provincial Ministry of Health by the President as the Chief Guest.

Head of the Department of Nephrology & Transplantation at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital who worked very closely with HE the President spearheaded the constructions in close cooperation with the CES and other supportive troops to realize the project.

Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva, Commander of the Navy, Major General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Staff, Major General Kumudu Perera, Commander, Security Forces - Wanni and a host of Senior Army, Navy and Air Force Officers who were present added memories to the occasion by sitting for a group photograph with HE the President.
