Parallel Army Day and 65th Anniversary ceremonies took place at all island-wide Security Force Headquarters, Divisions, Brigades and Battalions on October 10, 2014 after hoisting the Army Flag in their respective formations.
Commanders at all levels also read the Army Day message of the Commander and the event, was marked with due recognition and ceremony.
Major General Udaya Perera, Commander, Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J), planted a mango sapling in the premises after formal military ceremonies before he took part in an all rank tea party.
Meanwhile, Headquarters of 51, 52, 55 Divisions, Brigades and Battalions in Jaffna, in addition to formalities, organized several religious and social welfare programmes to coincide with the main event. A special religious pooja was conducted at Vallipuram Kovil on the same day, to invoke blessings on the Army. Several senior officers and other ranks as well as civilians took part in the arrangement.
Meanwhile, Major General Boniface Perera, Commander, Security Force Headquarters - Wanni (SFHQ-W), together with Brigadier Administration and Quartering and many other senior officers visited Abimansala, Anuradapura and distributed gift packs among the inmates. Finally a Bodhi Pooja was conducted with all ranks under the guidance of Major General Boniface Perera.
Tree planting, Shramadana campaigns in schools, kovil and hospital premises, added significance to the day under the SFHQ-MLT. Moreover, free meals were also provided to poor people and a Bodhi Pooja plus a blood donation camp had been organized to coincide with the 65th anniversary under the guidance of Major General Jagath Dias.
In Kilinochchi, the Security Force Headquarters - Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) after formal military traditions on the Army Day, organized distribution of gift parcels to orphanages, scholarships and school accessories to poor students, award of sarees, stationery parcels, shalwars, etc. From each item, more than 100 units were thus awarded to the civilians.
Similarly, the SFHQ-KLN with the intention of providing artificial limbs to disable people in the area, took measurements. Rotary Club of India supported those programmes providing sponsorships and the donation programme took place in the presence of the General Officer Commanding, 66 Division, 662 and 663 Brigade Commanders and a large gathering of civilians.
In the meantime, Security Force Headquarters - Central (SFHQ-C) organized elaborate programmes at the SFHQ-C premises to mark the Army Day and its 65th Anniversary.
A Bodhi Pooja, planting of tree saplings, Shramadana campaign, in addition to the customary formalities were conducted throughout the day, with a special lunch organized for all ranks.
All the ceremonies organized on the instructions of Major General Mano Perera, Commander, SFHQ-C were conducted throughout the day.
A Shramadana campaign was held at Rangiri Dambulla Home for Elders in Dambulla on 10 October 2014 by the 53 Division. All 42 inmates were entertained to tea to mark the Army Anniversary.
In the meantime, the 65th anniversary was celebrated at the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) Headquarters at Kosgama on the directions of Major General Lalith Daulgala, Commandant, SLAVF.
Following the flag hoisting, the Army song was sung and the Commander’s message was read. Brigadier W.A.N.M Weerasinghe read the message of the Commander of the Army and tree planting was performed afterwards.
To be in line with the anniversary, Hospital premises in Kosgama was cleaned with the support of the troops of the SLAVF. Sanda Sewana home for Elders’ was cleaned up and all Elders were offered tea.
A dinner was provided to 39 children at children’s home at Trincomalee by 222 Brigade of the 22 Division in the East. Celebrating the anniversary of the Sri Lanka Army, a lunch was also offered to 58 elders at Elders Home in Linganagar by the 22 Division in the East.
A similar ceremony was reported in the Forward Maintenance area in the North and East. 27 children at Anuradhapura ‘Sarana Bauddha Foundation’ were provided with dinner from the KFC. Cleaning the surrounding of the children’s home was done by the troops of the Forward Maintenance area and children were given small gifts at the end to express the joy of the 65th anniversary.
