Villagers in No 20 Wattewewa and Herath Halmillewa Grama Seva sectors under Kebithigollewa Divisional Secretariat in the Security Force Headquarters - Wanni (SFHQ-W) began using solar power as an alternative solution to their lack of electricity, thanks to the efforts of Empower Sri Lanka Institute, manned by students at University of Colombo, following initiatives taken by 17 Battalion Sri Lanka National Guard (SLNG) of the 62 Division.
On May 25, a brief ceremony inaugurated the solar power electricity generation for villagers and the community hall in the area. 6 families in Nikawewa, two families in Morakewa and several other families received these solar power units and bulbs, needed for common places in the area were also distributed at the same occasion.
Representatives of Empower Sri Lanka Institute, 623 Brigade Commander, 17 Battalion SLNG Commanding Officer, senior civilians and a big gathering of villagers attended the event.
