Army Contributes to International Coastal Cleanup Day

The National Marine Resources Conservation Week (19-25 Sept) that coincides with the International Coastal Cleanup Day-2020 (19 September) was inaugurated this morning (19) along the popular Mount Lavinia beach patch in collaboration with the Marine Environment Protection Authority, Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, together with a large gathering of Tri service troops and volunteers.

Hon Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Hon Minister of Environment, Parliamentarians, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Navy and Air Force Commanders, Senior Police Officers as distinguished invitees took part in the inaugural cleanup programme with others. A large gathering of tri service troops also contributed to the drive with enthusiasm, together with all volunteers.

Hon Prime Minister also distributed prizes to winners in the poster campaign and the art exhibition that coincided with the International Coastal Cleanup Day-2020 after a brief welcome speech. The cleaning project, backed by school students too got to a start after the brief inauguration.
