Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army commenced his second day’s itinerary in Lebanon on Monday (26) after paying a courtesy call on Director Mission Support (DMS) at United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Sri Lanka’s Army Chief, now in Lebanon in order to inspect operational duties of his 150-strong contingent of troops serving the UNIFIL made history by being the first Commander from Sri Lanka to have visited troops in Lebanon and Haiti and met UN administrative authorities.
During Monday morning’s courtesy call on Mr Girish Sinha, DMS at his office, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya exchanged views on matters of bilateral relevance, particularly related to deployment of Sri Lankan troops on UN Peacekeeping missions overseas.
Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya during the meeting with the DMS in Lebanon pointed out how the Sri Lanka Army matured into be a professional one with its vast collection of battlefield experience and modern warfare military know-how while promoting its multifaceted skills in many spheres.
DMS in return expressed his happiness over the Army Commander’s visit to the UNIFIL and his meeting with Sri Lanka Force Protection Company (SLFP-Coy) in Lebanon. Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya before bidding goodbye presented a symbolic memento to the DMS.
A few minutes later, the visiting Commander made a visit to the UNIFIL Headquarters and met the Force Commander extending courtesies. Major General Alberto Asarta Cuevas, UNIFIL force Commander warmly received the visiting Army Chief and appreciated his visit to the UNIFIL where some 11108 troops from 36 countries are serving after the UNIFIL was first established in 1978 following adoption of Security Council Resolutions 425 and 426.
UNIFIL Force Commander exchanged pleasantries with his Sri Lankan counterpart and hailed SLFP-Coy services to the UNIFIL. Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya after leaving his signature in the VIP book at UNIFIL office presented him with a plaque as a token of memory before his exit from that office.
