Army Chief on 'Women's Day' Commends Army Women's Professional Contribution

The International Women’s Day on March 8 marks the achievements of women in various fields and celebrates women's achievements, raises awareness about women's equality, and lobbies for accelerated gender parity. The Sri Lanka Army which boasts a wide participation of women in the organization as Seva Vanitha President, Chairpersons, Senior Women Officers, Directresses, UN Peacekeepers, UN Observers, Special Women Operation Teams, Demining Women, Rider teams, Skydivers, Sports achievers, Innovators, Administrators in Ordnance Corps, Contributors to Service Corps, Corps of Engineer Services, Sri Lanka Engineers, Signallers, Legal and accountancy professionals, Medical Officers and paramedics, English Instructors, Language Translators, Counsellors and thousands of Other Ranks as women soldiers involved in a multitude of service roles, has come together which also marks this global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, says General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army in a brief message of greetings and best wishes, issued on account of the International Women's Day.

As worldwide groups come together to celebrate women's achievements and rally for women's equality, this Day in the year 2022 is themed on "Break the Bias" in order to forge women's equality, free from bias, stereotypes, and discrimination, and the Sri Lanka Army Seva Vanitha Unit members, chaired by Mrs Sujeewa Nelson has made elaborate arrangements, "Senehase Kedella" programme to mark the day at Panagoda.

During this commemorative event, a record 350 Lady officers and women Other Ranks of the Army are expected to receive cash grants for medical needs, housing/construction needs and other requirements of women soldiers and their family members where a thematic musical entertainment couples with the main programme.

General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army as the Chief Guest, together with Mrs Sujeewa Nelson, President, Army seva Vanitha Unit graces the Army 'Women's Day' programme at Panagoda this morning (8).
