Army Chief Recalls Noteworthy Roles of Retiring ‘Keterian’

Major General Dammi Hewage of Gajaba Regiment (GR), Director General Infantry on the verge of his retirement from the Army, having served for more than 35 years in an exemplary manner, arrived on invitation at the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage on Thursday (28), together with his family members.

Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Commander of the Army who praised the retiring Senior Officer for his noteworthy service extended a warm welcome and highly appreciated his dedicated and committed roles in various capacities in the past while speaking high of his loyalty and integrity to the organization throughout.

He also refreshed memories of the retiree’s invaluable sacrifices and fearless roles during the height of the war against terrorism as a true infantryman before May 2009 and his unforgettable contribution to the success story of the war. “You went forward bravely and joined the Special Forces on your own at that critical stage of fierce operations on a temporary basis to fight the enemy, a brave act that can only be accomplished by a true infantryman,” the Army Chief commented.

In addition, the Army Chief highly appreciated his role as a very capable instructor in the Army and shared a few views about his future endeavours and plans.

The Gajaba Regiment (GR)-groomed Senior Officer during his tenure of office served many key command, Staff and Instructor appointments in various establishments before he was appointed as the Director General Infantry at the Army headquarters. The Army Chief during the interaction shared a few thoughts with his family members who were present at the occasion and thanked them for the inspiration and courage they had given to the outgoing Senior Officer in the performance of his duties.

The outgoing Senior Officer also in turn thanked the Commander of the Army for his wishes and guidance while mentioning the encouragement he received from the Army Chief in the performance of his duties.

Towards the end of the interaction, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage awarded a special memento to the outgoing Major General Dammi Hewage as a symbol of appreciation and commendation along with a special gift to the family.
