Major General P.A.C. Fernando USP, the Director General of Army Health Services of the Sri Lanka Army, was invited to the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, on 02 October 2024, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army.
During the meeting, the Army Chief commended the Senior Officer for his unwavering dedication and exemplary performance in various challenging roles throughout his career, both during the war and the post-war era. In response, Major General P.A.C. Fernando USP expressed profound gratitude for the steadfast guidance and support provided by the Army Chief. Towards the end of the interaction, the Commander of the Army presented a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer and gifts for his family.
Major General P.A.C. Fernando USP enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as a medical student and was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant on 15 November 1990. He was then posted to the Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps. Over the span of his service, he steadily elevated through the ranks, eventually being promoted to Major General on 04 May 2023. The Senior Officer retired from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army effective from 06 October 2024, upon reaching 60 years of age.
Throughout his career, the Senior Officer held numerous key appointments, including Medical Officer at the Army Base Hospital - Palaly, Area Headquarters - Vavuniya, Army Hospital - Colombo, Second-in-Command of the 1st Regiment Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps, Second-in-Command of the Army Hospital (Colombo), Officiating Deputy Director of the Directorate of Army Medical Services at Army Headquarters, Director of the Army Hospital - Colombo, Director of the Directorate of Army Medical Services at Army Headquarters, Officiating Director General of Army Health Services, Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps, and Director General of Army Health Services.
The retiring Senior Officer made significant contributions to the war against terrorism, playing a leading role on the battlefield by treating casualties during major military operations. In recognition of his dedicated service to the Army, he was appointed as Director General of Army Health Services, one of the most senior and prestigious appointments that could be held by a senior medical Officer in the rank of Major General.
The Senior Officer holds academic qualifications, including a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Colombo, and a Doctor of Medicine in Anaesthesiology (MD) from the University of Colombo.
