All ranks of the Commando Regiment (CR) of the Army on Thursday (10) morning gathered together at their Ganemulla CR Regimental Headquarters to extend a warm welcome to the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake who was making his first visit to the headquarters after assumption of office as the Commander.

Nearly a four-digit of Commandos who have earned a name for themselves as fierce Army fighters of the best quality, warmly greeted the visiting Army Chief with elaborate arrangements, put in place on the directions of the Colonel of the Regiment, Major General Prasanna De Silva.

In conformity with military formalities, a Guard Turn Out presented arms to the visiting Commander at the entrance to the CR Headquarters after he was received by Major General Prasanna De Silva and CR Centre Commandant.

Minutes after his arrival Lieutenant General Ratnayake was invited to the parade ground to receive the Guard of Honour, accorded to him. The Commander in the company of the Parade Commander and Colonel of the Regiment afterwards inspected the Guard of Honour before taking the salute to be in line with military traditions.

Giving due respect to the memory of valiant Commandos who had laid their lives for the sake of the motherland, a floral-wreath laying ceremony, took place at the CR monument inside the premises before the rest of the itinerary.

Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake in a solemn moment of revered memory, placed a floral wreath at the foot of the memorial and saluted the fallen, in the company of the Colonel of the Regiment.

A few minutes later, the Commander rose to his feet and addressed the packed audience, anxiously awaiting his oration.

Lieutenant General Ratnayake, making a few valid points, told the attendees that CR, mostly responsible for security of the VIPs, should continue to maintain the highest standards of discipline, considering the sensitive nature of their duties.  as the country is very much engaged in different development roles and projects.

Reminding them of their motto, ‘Nothing is Impossible’, the Commander heaped a volume of praise on unparalleled sacrifices and unmatched dedication, hitherto made by the Commandos, making the Army as well as the country proud.

‘You all are among the lasts to come forward with the best solutions and to this date, Sri Lanka Army Commandos are looked upon with respect and dignity. You all have done a marvellous job by providing the best security from the first citizen to all down the line with determination and utmost care,’ the Commander commented. ‘Courage and competence emanate from the bottom of your confidence which you have gained through your sea of training and experience. All these things are needed to steer clear of the challenges, ahead of us as well as ahead of the country at large. If our commitments are strong and solid, no one could hamper our onward march. Such moves could either be local or international, which you should remember all the time’ the Commander underlined.

‘It is particularly important to keep in mind that your service is provided to the most distinguished group of people and it is the discipline that mirrors your conduct. Therefore the highest levels of discipline among you are a must that should not be forgotten under any circumstances,’ the Commander stressed.

‘Like in any other country in the world, you all have a responsibility towards the nation since all peace-loving people expect to live a better life, devoid of fear and violence. Your sacrifices are well etched in the memory of all Sri Lankans,’ he reminded.

Before the Chief Guest’s exit from the CR Regimental Headquarters, Major General Silva made a presentation of the roles and tasks of the Commandos, scattered everywhere for different official commitments. The Commander at the same time, talked to officers separately as the day’s agenda was coming to a close.

Before his exit from the premises, the Commander was invited to plant a tree sapling to signify the symbolic memory of his visit to the place.
