Army Chief Extends Best Wishes to Retiring Major General A.L Illangakoon

Major General A.L Illangakoon, Commander, Forward Maintenance Area - Mullaittivu and Colonel Commandant, Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police (SLCMP), just six days before his retirement from the Army, having served for more than 34 years was invited to the office of the Commander of the Army, together with his family members on Friday (11) afternoon.

Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, Commander of the Army during the meeting with the retiring Senior Officer recalled noteworthy milestones during the latter’s admirable career as an experienced Provost Officer. The Army Chief praised him for his dedicated service and performance of diverse responsibilities with unfailing commitment and selflessness.

Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage similarly refreshed memories of the retiree’s contribution and valuable roles during the height of the war against terrorism as a Provost Officer of the highest calibre before May 2009 and shared few reminiscences with the day's invitee.

Major General A.L Illangakoon also gratefully acknowledged the able guidance lent to him all the time by the Commander in the performance of his office as the Commander, Forward Maintenance Area - Mullaittivu and other diverse capacities and thanked the Army Commander for his invitation.

The Army Chief while sharing a few pleasantries with his family members, invited to the occasion also inquired into the retiring Senior Officer’s future endeavours and plans. He also commended the precious support that has been given to the Senior Officer by his family members throughout his career particularly during challenging times.

Towards the end of the interaction, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage awarded a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a symbol of appreciation and commendation along with a special gift to the family. The gesture was reciprocated by the retiring Senior Officer.

Major General A.L Illangakoon enlisted to the Sri Lanka Army on 06 October 1988 and underwent basic military training in the Kotelawala Defence University and the Sri Lanka Military Academy in the Intake 32 B before he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police. He was promoted to the rank of Major General on 14 September 2021.

He has been holding the office of the Commander, Forward Maintenance Area-Mullaittivu and Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police at the time of his retirement. He has also earlier held the offices of the Provost Officer of Field Provost Company 1 SLCMP, Adjutant,1 SLCMP, Officer Commanding, General Staff Officer 2 of Directorate of Provost Marshal, Major Administration and Quartering of 513 Infantry Brigade, Second-In-Command of 1 SLCMP, Officer Commanding of Provost Company, Sri Lankan Battalion in United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Officiating Staff Officer 1 of Forward Maintenance Area (North), Commanding Officer of 4 SLCMP,3 SLCMP and 2 SLCMP, Commandant of School of Military Police, Commanding Officer of Special Investigation Unit, Colonel (Administration) of Directorate of Personnel Administration, Centre Commandant of Regimental Centre Sri Lanka Army Corps of Military Police and Provost Marshal, Army Headquarters.

During his service period, he has undergone many local and overseas courses, including the Young Officers’ Course, Officer Par Excellence Course, Junior Command Course, Senior Detective Diploma Course, Officer Provost Course India, Officers’ Criminal Investigation Course - Pakistan, Defence Management Course - India, etc.
