Army Chief Commends Service of Major General M.M Salwatura (Retd) RWP RSP USP

Major General M.M Salwatura (Retd) RWP RSP USP, was invited to the Office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, on 06 December 2024, along with his family members, after retiring from the Sri Lanka Army, completing a notable career spanning 33 years.

During the meeting, the Army Chief commended the Senior Officer for his unwavering dedication and exemplary performance in various challenging roles throughout his service, both during the war against terrorism and in the post-war period. The Commander also acknowledged the pivotal support provided by his family throughout his career.

In response, Major General M.M Salwatura RWP RSP USP expressed his profound gratitude for the steadfast guidance and support offered by the Army Chief.

Towards the end of the meeting, the Commander of the Army presented a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a token of appreciation along with gifts for his family.

Here is a brief profile of the retiring Senior Officer:

Major General M.M Salwatura RWP RSP USP enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army to the Intake PMA-3 as an Officer Cadet on 02 May 1991. Upon successful completion of military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy - Diyatalawa and the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA), he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Gemunu Watch on 14 April 1992. After being steadily elevated to subsequent ranks in the course of the span of service in the Army, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 30 September 2024. The Senior Officer retired from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army on 08 October 2024 upon reaching 55 years of age. Prior to his retirement, he held the appointment of Principal Staff Officer, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force.

Throughout his career, he held various key appointments, including Platoon Commander of 7th Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Officer Instructor of Officer Cadet Wing at Sri Lanka Military Academy, Platoon Commander of 7th Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Officer Commanding of Rear Headquarters the Gemunu Watch, Kohuwala, Officer Commanding of 7th Battalion the Gemunu Watch, General Staff Officer 3 (Operations) of Headquarters in 513 Infantry Brigade, Squadron Commander of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy, Officer Commanding (Command and Administration Company) of 7th Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Second-in-Command of 7th Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Officer Commanding of Sri Lanka Battalion in United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), General Staff Officer 2 (Operations) of Headquarters in 55 Infantry Division, Officiating General Staff Officer 1 (Coordinating) of Security Force Headquarters (Wanni), Commanding Officer of 12th Battalion the Gemunu Watch, Staff Officer 1 (Officer Cadet Enlistment Wing) of Directorate of Personnel Administration at Army Headquarters, Sector Commander of Sector 09 at Operations Command in Colombo, Staff Officer 1 (Training & Doctrine) of Office of the Chief of Defence Staff, Military Observer of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), Deputy Commandant of Army School of Logistics, Commander of 521 Infantry Brigade, Commander of 142 Infantry Brigade, Centre Commandant of Regimental Centre Sri Lanka Army Medical Corps and Principal Staff Officer of Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force.

The Senior Officer has been also awarded Rana Wickrama Padakkama, Rana Sura Padakkama in recognition of his bravery on the battlefield and Uttama Seva Padakkama for his exceptional, distinguished and loyal service.

He also completed numerous local and foreign training courses during his military career, including Unit Administration Course, Basic Tamil Course and Potential Observers and Staff Officers Course in Sri Lanka and Basic Cadet Course in Pakistan, Infantry Young Officers Course in India, Junior Command Course in India.
