Army Chief Commends Senior Officer’s Exemplary Service

Major General P. Vithanage was invited to the Office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo RSP ctf-ndu psc IG, on 07 March 2025, together with his family members, following his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after completing a distinguished career spanning 33 years.

During the meeting, the Army Chief commended the Senior Officer for his unwavering dedication and exemplary performance in various challenging roles throughout his tenure, both during the war against terrorism and in the post-war era. He also acknowledged the pivotal role played by the Senior Officer’s dedicated family in supporting his career.

Below is a brief profile of the Retiring Senior Officer:

Major General P. Vithanage enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet into the Intake KDA-09 on 17 November 1991. Upon successfully completing military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa, and the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers on 22 November 1993.

Progressing steadily through the ranks during his service in the Army, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 10 February 2025. He retired from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 15 February 2025, upon reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he was serving as the Director of the Directorate of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers at Army Headquarters and as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Army Tennis Committee.

He held various appointments during his career, including Platoon Commander of the Internal Security Platoon, Vavuniya, Platoon Commander of the School of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, Officer Commanding of Headquarters - Task Force 1, Officer Commanding of the Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers Field Workshop at Headquarters - 51 Infantry Division, Workshop Officer of the Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers Base Workshop (Udawalawa), Officer Commanding of the Internal Security Company, Vavuniya, Adjutant of the 3rd Battalion Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, Officer Commanding of the Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers Field Workshop - 4th Armoured Regiment, Sri Lanka Armoured Corps, Second-in-Command of the Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (Armoured) Battalion, Officer Commanding of the Electrical & Mechanical Engineers Sri Lanka Battalion - United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Second-in-Command of the 1st Battalion Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, Staff Officer 1 (Administration and Quartering) at Headquarters - 21 Infantry Division, Commanding Officer of the 3rd Battalion Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, Commanding Officer of the Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (Armoured) Battalion, Commanding Officer of Headquarters Battalion, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Staff Officer 1 (Logistics) at the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff (OCDS), Commandant of the Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers Base Workshop (Udawalawa), Colonel (Administration and Logistics) at Headquarters - 21 Infantry Division, Colonel (Administration and Logistics) at the Defence Services Command and Staff College, Colonel (Projects) at the Directorate of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, Brigadier (Administration and Quartering) at Headquarters - National Cadet Corps, Officiating Logistics Commander at Security Force Headquarters (Jaffna) and Director of the Directorate of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers.

The Senior Officer has completed numerous local and foreign courses during his military career, including the Young Officers Course, Junior Command Course, Officers’ Advanced Mechanical Engineering Course in India, Workshop Company Commanders Course in India, Senior Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Officers Course in India and Higher Defence Management Course in India.
