Army Chief Commends Retiring Major General’s Notable Service

Major General M.P.K. Madurapperuma RSP USP psc, Chief Field Engineer at Army Headquarters, was invited to the office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, on 09 September 2024, together with his family, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army.

During the meeting, the Army Chief commended the Senior Officer for his unwavering dedication and exemplary performance in various challenging roles throughout his career, both during the war and the post-war era. The Commander of the Army also acknowledged the pivotal role played by his family in supporting him throughout his career. In response, Major General M.P.K. Madurapperuma RSP USP psc expressed profound gratitude for the steadfast guidance and support provided by the Army Chief. At the end of the interaction, the Commander of the Army presented a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a symbol of appreciation and commendation, along with gifts for his family.

Major General M.P.K. Madurapperuma RSP USP psc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet in Intake PMA-01 on 07 September 1990. Upon successful completion of military training at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) and the Sri Lanka Military Academy - Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers on 13 September 1991. After steadily elevating through the ranks, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 19 August 2023. The Senior Officer will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army on 10 September 2024.

Throughout his career, he held various appointments, including Troop Commander and Intelligence Officer - 5th Field Engineer Regiment, Adjutant - 9th Field Engineer Regiment, Officer Instructor at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy, Officer Commanding - 91 Squadron of 9th Field Engineer Regiment, Officer Instructor at the Sri Lanka Military Academy and the Army Training School, Officer Instructor at the Volunteer Force Training School, Staff Officer 2 at the 4th (Volunteer) Engineer Regiment, Officer Commanding - 74 Plant Squadron, Second-in-Command - 7th Field Engineer Regiment, General Staff Officer 1 at the Office of the Chief Field Engineer, Commanding Officer - Sri Lanka Air Field Maintenance Unit Contingent with the United Nations Mission in the Central African Republic and Chad, General Staff Officer 1 (Plans and Procurement) at the Office of the Chief Field Engineer, Commanding Officer - 9th Field Engineer Regiment, Staff Officer 1 at the Chief of Staff Office, Commanding Officer - Independent Workshop, Military Liaison Officer of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Officiating Colonel (Coordinating) at the Office of the Chief Field Engineer, Commandant - Sri Lanka School of Military Engineering, Commander - 573 Infantry Brigade, Centre Commandant - Regimental Centre of the Sri Lanka Engineers, Director General - Directorate of Real Estate & Quartering, and Chief Field Engineer at Army Headquarters.

The Senior Officer has been awarded the Rana Sura Padakkama for his bravery in service.

The Senior Officer has completed numerous local and foreign courses during his military career, including Platoon Commanders Tactics Course, Officers’ Operational Staff Duties Course, Army Command and Staff Course, Humanitarian Demining Management Course, Officer Cadet Training Course - Pakistan, Young Officers’ Engineers Course - Pakistan, Combined Officers Bomb Disposal Course - India, and the United Nations Civil-Military Coordination Course - Indonesia.

In addition to his military education, the Senior Officer has pursued non-military courses, including a Bachelor of Arts at the Pakistan Military Academy, Master of Defence Studies at the University of Kelaniya, and a Master of Business Administration in E-Governance at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.
