Army Chief Commends Retiring Major General’s Distinguished Service

Major General R.M.P.S.B Rathnayake ndc, the Logistics Commander of Security Force Headquarters (West), was invited to the Office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, on 21 October 2024, along with his family members, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after a distinguished 34-year service.

During the meeting, the Army Chief commended the Senior Officer for his unwavering dedication and exemplary performance in various challenging roles throughout his service, both during the war against terrorism and in the post-war period. The Commander also acknowledged the pivotal support provided by his family throughout his career.

In response, Major General R.M.P.S.B Rathnayake ndc expressed his profound gratitude for the steadfast guidance and support offered by the Army Chief. Towards the end of the meeting, the Commander of the Army presented a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a token of appreciation, along with gifts for his family.

Here is a brief profile of the retiring Senior Officer:

Major General R.M.P.S.B Rathnayake ndc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet to the Intake PMA 1 on 07 September 1990. After completing his military training at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) and the Sri Lanka Military Academy - Diyatalawa (SLMA), he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Signal Corps on 13 March 1991. Over the course of his career, he steadily rose through the ranks and was promoted to the rank of Major General on 03 May 2024. He will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army on 24 October 2024, upon reaching the age of 55.

Throughout his career, he held various key appointments, including Instructor at the School of Signals, Troop Commander of the 1st Regiment Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Internal Security Officer of Headquarters 5 Infantry Brigade, Signal Officer of Headquarters 3 Infantry Brigade, Motor Transport Officer of the 1st Regiment Sri Lanka Signal Corps, General Staff Officer 3 (Operations) at Headquarters 22 Infantry Division, Signal Officer of Headquarters 6 Infantry Brigade, Officer Commanding of the 5th Reinforcement Regiment Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Senior Intelligence Officer at Headquarters 52 Infantry Division, Officer Commanding of the Communication Squadron at the 1st Regiment Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Officer Commanding of the Signal Squadron at the 22 Infantry Division, Officer Commanding of the Headquarters Squadron at the 1st Regiment Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Brigade Major of Headquarters 515 Infantry Brigade, Training and Administration Officer at the School of Signals, Chief Instructor of the School of Signals, Second-in-Command of the 6th Reinforcement Regiment Sri Lanka Signal Corps, General Staff Officer 1 (Operations) at Area Headquarters Mannar, General Staff Officer 1 (Operations) at Headquarters 54 Infantry Division, General Staff Officer 1 (Electronic Warfare) at the Office of the Chief Signal Officer, Army Headquarters, Commanding Officer of the 7th Reinforcement Regiment Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Commanding Officer of the 7th Regiment Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Commanding Officer of the Administration Wing at the Officer Career Development Centre (OCDC), Staff Officer 1 (Administration) at the Regimental Centre Sri Lanka Signal Corps, Staff Officer 1 at the Directorate of Sports, Army Headquarters, Colonel (General Staff) at Headquarters 65 Infantry Division, Commander of the 561 Infantry Brigade, Director of the Army Information Technology Solutions Centre (AITSC), Brigadier (Coordinating) at the Office of the Chief Signal Officer, Army Headquarters, Director of the Border Risk Assessment Centre (BRAC) at the Ministry of Defence and Logistics Commander of Security Force Headquarters (West).

He also completed numerous local and foreign training courses during his military career, including the Officers Par Excellence Course, Motor Transport Officers’ Course, Computer Awareness Course, National Security and Strategic Studies Course in Sri Lanka. Signals Young Officers Course and Signals Company Commanders Course in India.

In addition, the Senior Officer pursued higher education, earning a Diploma in Human Resource Management & Organizational Behaviour at the American College of Higher Education in Sri Lanka, a Diploma in Human Rights at the Institute of Human Rights in Sri Lanka, and a Master of Science in National Security and Strategic Studies at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.
