Major General S.B Amunugama RWP RSP ndu, Commander - 1 Corps, was invited to the Office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, on 03 July 2024, together with his family members, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after a notable career of 35 years.
During the meeting, the Army Chief lauded the Senior Officer for his unwavering dedication and exemplary performance in various challenging roles throughout his tenure, both during the war against terrorism and in the post-war era. The Army Commander also acknowledged the pivotal role played by his dedicated family throughout his career. In response, Major General S.B Amunugama RWP RSP ndu expressed profound gratitude for the steadfast guidance and support given to him by the Army Chief. Toward the end of the interaction, the Commander of the Army presented a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a symbol of appreciation and commendation, along with gifts to his family.

Major General S.B Amunugama RWP RSP ndu enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet to Intake 31 A on 20 January 1989. Upon successful completion of military training at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) and the Sri Lanka Military Academy - Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Gajaba Regiment on 05 April 1991. After being steadily elevated to subsequent ranks over the span of his service in the Army, he was promoted to the rank of Major General on 18 May 2022. The Senior Officer will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 08 July 2024, reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he was holding the appointment of Commander - 1 Corps.

The Senior Officer has been awarded Rana Wickrama Padakkama and Rana Sura Padakkama medals in appreciation of his dedicated service rendered during his tenure in the Sri Lanka Army.
He has completed numerous local and foreign courses during his military career, including the Platoon Commanders Tactics Course, Battalion Support Weapons Officers’ Course, Basic Computer Course, Balance Style Course, Potential Observer and Staff Officer Course, Young Officers’ Course - India, Mortar Officers Course - India, Junior Command Course - India, Joint Operations Staff Course - China, Army Mid-level Command Course - China, and National Security and War Course - Pakistan.
The Senior Officer also followed several higher educational and non-military courses, including a Certificate Course in Human Resource Management at the Institute of Personnel Management Sri Lanka (IPM) and a Master’s in National Security and War Studies at the National Defence University - Pakistan.
