Army Chief Commends Distinguished Service of Retiring Director General, Electrical & Mechanical Engineers

Major General S.A.N.J Ariyasena, Director General, Directorate of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, was invited to the Office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, on 03 September 2024, together with his family members, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army.

During the meeting, the Army Chief commended the Senior Officer for his unwavering dedication and exemplary performance in various challenging roles throughout his tenure, both during the war and post-war era.

The Commander of the Army also acknowledged the pivotal role played by his family throughout his career. In response, Major General S.A.N.J Ariyasena, expressed profound gratitude for the steadfast guidance and support provided by the Army Chief. Towards the end of the interaction, the Commander of the Army presented a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a symbol of appreciation and commendation, along with gifts for his family.

Major General S.A.N.J Ariyasena, enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet in Intake 35 on 02 January 1991. Upon successful completion of military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy - Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers on 29 August 1992. He was steadily promoted through the ranks during his service in the Army, ultimately achieving the rank of Major General on 05 June 2024. The Senior Officer will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 08 September 2024, upon reaching 55 years of age. At the time of his retirement, he held the appointments of Director General, Directorate of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, Army Headquarters.

During his career, he held various appointments, including Platoon Commander of Internal Security Platoon in Palaly, Platoon Commander of Internal Security Platoon in Vavuniya, Officer Commanding of Field Workshop in Welioya, Workshop Officer in 2nd (Volunteer) Battalion of Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, Workshop Officer of 1st Battalion in Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, Officer Commanding of Field Workshop in Mannar, Senior Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Officer of 53 Infantry Division, Adjutant of School of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, Officer Commanding of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers Armoured Brigade Workshop, Second-in-Command of Base Workshop in Udawalawa, Staff Officer 2 of Directorate of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers at Army Headquarters, Commanding Officer of 2nd (Volunteer) Battalion Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, Staff Officer 1 (Logistics) of Security Force Headquarters (Jaffna), Colonel (Projects) of Directorate of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers at Army Headquarters, Commandant of Base Workshop in Katubedda, Colonel (Administration and Quartering) of 65 Infantry Division, Colonel (Administration & Quartering) of Security Force Headquarters (East), Colonel (Electrical & Mechanical Engineers) of Directorate of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers at Army Headquarters, Brigadier (Logistics) of Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Brigadier (Administration and Quartering) of Security Force Headquarters (Mullaitivu), Commandant of Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers Regimental Centre, Director of Directorate of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers at Army Headquarters and Director General of Directorate of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers at Army Headquarters.

The Senior Officer has completed numerous local and foreign courses during his military career, including the Young Officers Course, Young Technical Officers Course in India, Workshop Company Commanders Course in India, Tank Electric Equipment Repair Course in China and Senior Officers’ Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Course in India.

The Senior Officer also pursued several higher educational and non-military courses, including Diploma in Computer Science at Golden Key Institute of Information Technology Limited in Sri Lanka.
