Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, Commander of the Army, invited two distinguished Sri Lanka Army athletes who have qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris to his office on 23 July 2024.
Staff Sergeant Aruna Darshana, a dedicated athlete of the Sri Lanka Army, has officially secured his place in the 400-metre event at the upcoming Paris Olympic Games. Staff Sergeant Darshana’s path to qualification was marked by determination and resilience.
Javelin thrower, Staff Sergeant Dilhani Lekamge has also secured her place in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games based on her impressive World Athletics ranking. The qualification period concluded on 30 June 2024, and recent updates have confirmed her participation. Currently ranked as the 26th in the world, Dilhani Lekamge is among the top 32 athletes selected for the Olympic javelin throw event.
During the meeting, the Army Chief expressed his pride and congratulations to both athletes for their remarkable achievements. He commended their dedication, hard work, and perseverance, which have not only earned them a place in the world’s most prestigious sporting event but also brought honour to the Sri Lanka Army and the country.
The Army Chief assured them of his full support and encouragement as they prepared for the upcoming Olympic Games. The event concluded with the presentation of financial assistance to encourage them.
