Army Chief Appraises Troops Involved in Rescue Operations

IN ORDER to learn ground realities and the methodical, but steady progress in the final rescue operation in the “No Fire Zone”(NFZ), meant to decapitate the world’s most ruthless terrorist outfit, Commander of the Army  Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka Thursday (30) morning undertook one more trip to Wanni Security Forces Headquarters in Vavuniya.

Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka during the meet  listened to detailed accounts, given to him by ground commanders who particularly rescued hundred thousands of trapped civilians from the NFZ in Puthumattalan.

The Army chief in his observations reminded his senior officers that the remaining rescue operations need more and more professional touch, as the entire world community was eagerly watching how we manage to rescue the remaining civilians with zero casualties on them. The Sri Lanka Army would be admired and much appreciated as time goes on after completion of this humanitarian operation, he emphasized.

Lieutenant General Fonseka appraised the collective team work of his troops that isolated the world’s most hated terrorist to a tiny patch of land by now who should be finally captured for the sake of peace in Sri Lanka. The fact that Prabhakaran was the sole liberator of Tamil people exists no more, as proved by fleeing Tamil civilians en masse, the Commander noted.

The Army Commander further advised his troops to keep extra vigil as Prabhakaran in the future might either escape fast or move out of the country without getting killed or caught.

The visiting Commander and other senior officers were received by the 57 Division Commander Major General Jagath Dias at the Air Force Base in Vanni on arrival. The discussion commenced after Major General Jagath Dias who has been at the forefront of the Vanni military operations from the day one, gave a comprehensive update on security developments and operations in the NFZ and elsewhere. Major General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni was busy attending a resettlement programme in Mannar.
