Army Chief Applauds Service of Retiring Major General

Major General G.M.N. Perera RWP RSP USP ndc, Commander, Security Forces (Central), and Colonel of the Regiment, Sri Lanka Light Infantry, was invited to the Office of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, on 04 October 2024, together with his family members, prior to his retirement from the Sri Lanka Army after a distinguished career spanning 35 years.

During the meeting, the Army Chief lauded the Senior Officer for his unwavering dedication and exemplary performance in various challenging roles throughout his tenure, both during the war against terrorism and in the post-war era. The Commander also acknowledged the pivotal role played by Major General Perera's dedicated family throughout his career.

In response, Major General G.M.N. Perera RWP RSP USP ndc expressed his profound gratitude for the steadfast guidance and support extended to him by the Army Chief. Toward the end of their interaction, the Commander of the Army presented a special memento to the retiring Senior Officer as a symbol of appreciation and commendation, along with gifts to his family.

Here is a brief profile of the retiring Senior Officer:

Major General G.M.N. Perera RWP RSP USP ndc enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet in Intake 32 on 14 July 1989. Upon successful completion of military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy in Diyatalawa, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to the Regiment of Sri Lanka Light Infantry on 19 January 1991. He was later promoted to the rank of Major General on 03 August 2022. The Senior Officer will retire from the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 08 October 2024, upon reaching the age of 55 years.

Throughout his career, he held various appointments, including Platoon Commander of the 1st Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Intelligence Officer of the 1st Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Adjutant of the 1st Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Officer Commanding of the 1st Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Staff Officer 3 of the Directorate of Personnel Administration at Army Headquarters, Officer Commanding (Administration Company) of the Headquarters, 11 Infantry Division, Staff Officer 2 (Administration) of the Headquarters, 11 Infantry Division, Brigade Major of the Headquarters, Air Mobile Brigade, Officer Commanding of the Sri Lanka Battalion, United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Officiating Chief Instructor of the Institute of Peace Support Operations Training Sri Lanka (IPSOTSL), Commanding Officer of the 7th Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Commandant of the Advanced Infantry Platoon Training (AIPT) School, Mullaitivu, Commanding Officer of the Regimental Headquarters Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Staff Officer 1 (Administration) at Headquarters, Logistics Command, Colonel (General Staff) at Headquarters of the 21 Infantry Division, Deputy Centre Commandant of the Regimental Centre Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Officiating Commander of the 591 Infantry Brigade, Officiating Commander of the 231 Infantry Brigade, Deputy Commandant of the Officer Career Development Centre (OCDC), Director of the Directorate of Recruiting at Army Headquarters, General Officer Commanding of the 12 Infantry Division, Quarter Master General of the Quarter Master General's Branch at Army Headquarters, and Colonel of the Regiment Sri Lanka Light Infantry, as well as Commander of the Security Forces (Central).

The Senior Officer has been awarded the Rana Wickrama Padakkama (twice) and the Rana Sura Padakkama (twice) for his bravery in the battlefield.

He completed numerous local and foreign courses during his military career, including Potential Observer and Staff Officers Course, International Humanitarian Law & Human Rights Advanced Refresher Training Course for Officers, International Humanitarian Law Advanced Refresher Training Course for Officers of the Armed Forces, Personal Security Officers cum Liaison Officers Course, National Security and Strategic Studies Course, Regimental Signal Officers’ Course (India), Young Officers Course (India), Junior Command Course (India), 18th International Course for Directors of Training, Program in the Law of Armed Conflict (Italy), Unit Command and Staff Course (Bangladesh), United Nations Military Contingent Officers Course (India), Higher Defence Orientation Course (India), and United Nations Military Induction Training Course (Haiti).

The Senior Officer also pursued several higher educational and non-military courses, including a Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management at the Open University of Sri Lanka, a Professional Qualification in Human Resource Management (PQHRM) at the Institute of Personnel Management Sri Lanka (IPM), a Master's in Human Resource Management at the University of Colombo, and a Master of Science in National Security and Strategic Studies at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.
