Army Chief Among Executive Committee Members in NSC

Hon Namal Rajapaksa (MP), the new Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs this evening (20) at the Sports Ministry in Torrington Square, Colombo 7 appointed new members to the National Sports Council (NSC), supposed to advise the Sports Minister on sports policy matters.

Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army who was working as Chairman to the National Sports Selection Committee was made one of the few Executive Committee Members in the NSC, to be headed by the former Sri Lanka cricket legend, Mahela Jayawardana for a period of two years.

Presenting letters of appointment to those NSC members, the new Minister congratulated all new appointees and highlighted the importance of those appointments in order to develop sports in the country. Julian Bolling, Kumar Sangakkara, Dilantha Malagamuwa, Kasturi Chellaraja Wilson are among other members.

The Minister received an extensive brief on the status quo of existing developments, progress of sports and conditions of each and every sport after presenting letters of appointment to 14 Executive Members for the Sports Board. Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva in his capacity as Chairman, National Sports Council Selection Committee too enlightened the Minister in regard to past year's achievements and drawbacks.
