Army CBRN Troops at the Forefront to Clean Chemical-affected Negombo Beach

The Army's 14 Chemical Biological Radiology and Nuclear (CBRN) Response Regiment of the Sri Lanka Engineers rising to the occasion moved out to chemical-affected beach areas in Negombo on the directions of General Shavendra Silva, Head, NOCPCO, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army on Thursday (27) in order for them to apply their technical expertise to clean and conserve the beach.

After the container ship 'X-Press Pearl' gutted and leaked chemical pollutants in the seas off the port of Colombo, 14 CBRN Regiment troops with the Sri Lanka Port Authority, Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) and Disaster Management Centre (DMC) along with available anti CBRN resources to avert possible catastrophic situation moved there along with two officers and 15 other ranks.

Cleaning operations with all sister agencies and servicemen are still underway covering a distance of about nearly 4.8 km in distance.
