Army Boxers Qualify for World Boxing Championship Tournament

Three Army Boxers representing Sri Lanka’s National Team are to take part in the World Boxing Championship, scheduled to be held in Azerbaijan between 22 September - 10 October, 2011.

Private W.A.C.I Perera of Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps (under 49 kg weight category), Lance Corporal S.R.P Ranaveera of Gajaba Regiment (under 52 kg weight category) and Corporal W.R.T Weerakkody of Sri Lanka Army Service Corps (under 56 kg weight category) who excelled during the pre-boxing tournament, held consecutively for three days (August 17, 18, 19) at Royal College, Colombo for selection of the national team to represent Sri Lanka in Azerbaijan.  Sri Lanka Amateur Boxers Association took the initiative for conduct of this selection tournament.

Meanwhile, Amateur Boxers Association Tournament, held at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium during August 22, 23, 24, 25 brought about overall win for the Army and produced ten Army Boxers who claimed championship and runners-up slots in the whole tournament.                   

Those male Army Boxers clinched five Golds, five Silvers while the female Army Boxers during the same tournament secured two Silver medals as Runners up under two categories and brought fame to the Army.   

Lance Corporal M.M. Eranga of Sri Lanka Army Armoured Corps, Private K.V. Priyantha of Sri Lanka Army Service Corps, Private N.B.A.J. Wimukthi Perera of Sri Lanka Army Service Corps, Recruit M.J.I.R.S. Bandara of Sri Lanka Army Engineer Corps, Private M.M.J. Muad of Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps, Lance Corporal A.N. Perera of Sri Lanka Gemunu Watch, Lance Corporal W.S.K.G. Samarakoon of Sri Lanka Army Military Corps, Private K.T. Ramesh of Sri Lanka Army Service Corps, Private K.P.G.K. Gunarathne of Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps and Gunner P.S.M. De Silva of Sri Lanka Artillery are among those who secured championship and runners up.

In the female sector, Woman Soldier W.N.D. Fernando of Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps and Woman Soldier H.S. Priyadarshani of Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps carried away the runners up trophy during this tournament.
