Army Basketball Players Make a Comeback after 1977 in National Tournament

The Sri Lanka Army's Basketball Team competing against island-wide civil and military Basketball teams in the just concluded 53rd Senior National Basketball Tournament at Sugathadasa Stadium clinched the runner-up slot after a close tussle against their rival, Mercantile Basketball Team.

The tournament, vied by 10 island-wide Basketball teams was held from 14 February to 20 February.

The final match between the Mercantile Basketball team and the Sri Lanka Army Basketball team on Sunday (20) was watched by a gathering of sport-lovers, including Major General Hirosha Wanigasekara, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Basketball Committee, several officers and other ranks.

The commitment, devotion and dedication of players and particularly the proper training given by Mr S. Selwaraja, Coach of the Sri Lanka Army Basketball team enabled the Army players to enter a final tussle in a national tournament of this importance for the first time after the year 1977.

General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army provided all encouragement and facilities for Army Basketball players through necessary instructions.
