Army Athletes Vie for Selection Prior to Forthcoming Olympic Games

The 57th Sri Lanka Army Athletics Championship began its first round on Tuesday (15) at Sugathadasa stadium in the wake of the upcoming Olympic Games selection for selected events as a precursor, adhering to health guidelines.

78 athletes representing 10 games participated in the championship where two new game records were also established.

Staff Sergeant W.K.H Eshan of Sri Lanka Artillery marking 10.34 seconds in 100m and Lance Bombardier W.S.M Perera of Sri Lanka Artillery recording 16.89 meters in potshot.

General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army instructed Major General Harendra Ranasinghe, Chairman, Athletic Committee and Commander Security Forces - Kilinochchi to make the championship a notable success by taking note of potential of Sri Lankan Athletes in the future..

Senior Members of the Army Athletic Committee, including Brigadier Chanaka Rathnayake, Brigadier Vipula Ihalage, Brigadier Janaka Ranasingha, Brigadier Wasantha Liyanawaduge, Brigadier Priyantha Nawarathna are among those committed for the success of this Army athletic championship.

Lance Bombardier W.S.M Fernando of Sri Lanka Artillery - Shot Put - 1st Place

Lance Corporal R.M.J.S Ranasinghe of Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers - Javelin Throw - 1st Place

Signal Women D.T.A De Silva of Sri Lanka Signal Corps - 100 m - 1st Place

Corporal R. Nadeesha of 5 (V) Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps - 400 m - 1st Place

Corporal W.V.L Sugandi of 2 (V) Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps - 100 MH - 1st Place

Staff Sergeant U.K.N Rathnayake of 7 Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps - 3000 m Steeple Chase - 1st Place
