Several Sri Lanka Army athletes, competing in the ‘Thailand Open Track and Field Championships 2017’ in Bangkok as members in the Sri Lankan contingent, have carried away one Gold medal and three Silver medals, beating athletes from South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Taipei and Singapore.
Those four Army athletes (two males and two females), Corporal R.A.K Karunathilake of Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (Silver Medal in decathlon), Corporal H.K.K Kumarage of Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (Gold Medal in 400 m), Private U.K.N Rathnayake of Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (Silver Medal in 3000 m hurdle run) and Private H.D.D Lakshani of Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (Silver Medal in triple jump), took part in this overseas tournament, together with other Sri Lankan athletes, sent there by the Sri Lanka Athletic Association.
Those athletes upon their return to Sri Lanka were welcomed by the officers in the Army Directorate of Sports.
