Army Athletes Create 3 More National Records

The 2nd stage of the 99th National Athletic Championship tournament got underway during 30 - 31 October at Sugathadasa Stadium with the participation of many athletes including those from the Army.

Corporal Roshan Dammika Ranathunga of the Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers established a new Sri Lanka record by clocking just 13.89 seconds in the 110m hurdle race, breaking the previous record of 14.00 seconds in the year 1997 which was made by Mahesh Perera at the Malayasian Athletic Championship.

In the pole vault, Private K.L.S.K Perera of Sri Lanka Signal Corps established another new national record by recording a 3.57m. The pole-vaulter, Private Perera broke her own record of 3.5 m in the year 2020 where she recorded 3.5 m.

In the meantime, the Army long-jumper, Private Sarangi Silva of Sri Lanka Women’s Corps made one more new record by recording 6.48m by breaking her own record of 6.44m in the year 2020.

Major General Harendra Ranasigha, Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Athletic Committee and Commander, 1 Corps of the Army was instrumental in grooming those athletes as per directions of General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army.

The 1st stage of the Championship Tournament took place in May.
