Army and Civilians in Soccer Tournament

Troops at the Security Force Headquarters – Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN) organized a 9-day Soccer Tournament during March 12-20 at the 65 Divisional Headquarters in Thunukkai.

With the intention of enhancing harmony and standards of sports skills among civilians and Army personnel in the area, the programme was organized on the directions of Brigadier Sarath Weerawardena, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 65 Division.

A total of 12 Army teams, 03 Civil Sports clubs and 03 School teams in the area participated in the tournament. 

At the final round, 10 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) regiment secured the championship defeating the 20 Gajaba Regiment (GR). Private Fernando was the best player while Private Anil Chandimage was adjudged the best goal keeper. 

St. Xavier Sports club at Thewanpiddi became the champions and the Winayagar Sports club at Mulankavil was selected as the first among civil sports clubs. 

Members of the St. Xavier Sports club P. Ranawath and Ragunadas were awarded as best goal keepers. 

The Mulankavil Maha Vidyalaya and Palinagar Maha Vidyalaya vied in the school category and Mulankavil school team won the championship. 

Awards as the best player and the best goal keeper were respectively secured by S Sagidas and S Dilakshan of the Mulankavil Maha Vidyalaya.

Winners of the tournament received their trophies and certificates from the day’s Chief Guest, Brigadier Sarath Weerawardena (GOC) at 65 Division. Brigade Commanders, senior officers, officers, other ranks, civilians and school students took part in the award ceremony.
