Officers and other ranks, members of the Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) and Viru Daru Society members joined hands together to recite Poson devotional songs at a colourful spectacle, staged at Panagoda Army Cantonment gymnasium on Friday (21) evening.
General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, together with Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch. Both of them were welcomed by two children of Viru Daru Society on arrival at the premises.
Organized by the Army Buddhist Association with the coordination of the Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB), the display paid homage to the memory of Arhat Mihindu Thero and his arrival in Sri Lanka on Poson Full Moon Poya Day.
The spectacle, comprised of several features presented by members of the Viru Daru societies, the Army cultural troupe, members of the SVAB and the Army band, was regarded a tribute to the historic Mahindagamana phenomenon that transformed the entire Sri Lankan social and cultural fabric during the rein of king Devanampiyatissa. A separate drama feature with the participation of about 25-30 Viru Daru members drew popularity on the occasion and several popular Ranaviru Real Star singers added their voice to the concert.
A large number of senior Army officers, ladies of the SVAB, Viru Daru society members and invitees witnessed the spectacle. All those who took part in the concert were awarded mementos as tokens of appreciation.
