Araly Point Recalls Supreme Sacrifices of Great Military Leaders

The Araly Point in Jaffna on Saturday (8) remembered the fateful day, in which one of the iconic and most admired military leaders in contemporary times fell silent, together with fellow-military veterans, like Major General Wijaya Wimalarathne, founding father of the prestigious Gajaba Regiment (GR) which has produced the incumbent Army Commander, too, Rear Admiral Mohan Jayamaha, Lieutenant Colonel H.R Stephen, Lieutenant Colonel G.H. Ariyarathne, Lieutenant Colonel Y.N Palipana, Commander Asanga Lankathilaka, Lieutenant Colonel Nalin de Alwis, Lieutenant Commander C.B. Wijepura and the soldier, Private W.J Wickremasinghe during a solemn ceremony, rich with military honours, a ceremony he attended, prior to his relinquishment of office.

Organized by the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J), the 28th death anniversary ceremony was headed by Major General Ruwan Wanigasooriya, Commander Security Forces - Jaffna a ceremony the attended prior to his relinquishment of office.

The day’s Chief Guest laid a floral wreath at the Araly Point monument and paid his tribute to those great warriors who added indelible chapters to the legacy of the Sri Lanka Army. Heralding of the Last Post and Reveille as troops stood on attention, the memory of those great sons of Sri Lanka was refreshed and venerated in flower.

Elsewhere at Anuradhapura town, the formal military ceremony commemorated their supreme sacrifice and saluted Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa’s statue before floral wreaths were laid, amid military honours by the Colonel Commandant of the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC), the Regiment to which the great Officer cum Gentleman belonged. Similarly, the SLAC Seva Vanitha Unit with the participation of Mrs Laly Kobbekaduwa, the beloved spouse of late Lieutenant General Kobbekaduwa on the same day (8) held a special Bodhi Pooja at the SLAC Regimental Headquarters and transferred merits to his memory and next birth.
