Annual Madu Church Feast Given Maximum Security

Security Force troops in the Wanni during the just-concluded feast of Our Lady of Madu in Madu, Mannnar cooperated closely with Policemen and ensured maximum security for the conduct of this historic feast, confirmed to have been attended by an estimated crowd of 340,000 devotees of all ethnicity on the final day (August 15) of the feast.

The tight and direct security network closely supervised by the Commander, Security Forces-Wanni Major General Jagath Gunawardena functioned smoothly with no inconvenience to the visiting devotees visiting this one of the holiest Catholic shrines in the island.

Sri Lanka Army has been providing security for the sacred event for many years in coordination with the Police. 613 Brigade Commander Colonel R.K.N.C Jayawardane carried out Security measures under the guidance and supervision of the General Officer Commanding of the 61 Division, Major General R.K.G.S Ketakumbura.

Troops representing 6 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI), 24 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI), 21 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR), 7 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) and 10 (Volunteer) Gemunu Watch (GW) during the day and night provided the necessary security to the premises and devotees.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu is a Roman Catholic Shrine in Mannar district.
