The 6th annual ‘Jaya Pirith’ chanting ceremony, organized by Ministry of Defence and Urban Development took place at BMICH premises Thursday (9) evening, followed by offer of Heel Daana to members of the Maha Sangha Friday (10) morning.
This annual mammoth Pinkama saw its birth as a concept of Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development in the year 2008 as humanitarian operations against terrorism, were entering a decisive phase. President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Mrs Shiranthi Rajapaksa graced the occasion as Chief Guests at the invitation of Ministry of Defence and Urban Development.
The special ‘Jaya Piritha’, a Buddhist canon of chanting invokes blessings on the country’s forward march, her people and all members of the armed forces and the Police.
More than 3000 Buddhist monks, including Ven Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Nayaka Thero, Chief Sangha Nayaka of Colombo and Chilaw divisions took part in the chanting that went on till Friday (10) morning.
Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa carried the relic casket for placement in the Pirith Mandapaya before commencement of the chanting.
A large gathering of Ministers, Deputy Ministers, tri-service Commanders, Inspector General of the Police and devotees took part in the meritorious event.
