Past pupils and students at Matale Vijaya College on Monday (14) felicitated their old pupil, Major General Vikum Liyanage, Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army during a special ceremony, named ‘Vijaya Viru Abiman’, held at Vijaya College premises.
Major General Vikum Liyanage, an active past pupil of the college excelled in sports and brought fame to the school by joining the Army to defend the territorial integrity of the country.
The ceremony spoke high of his dedicated roles as a battle-hardened warrior and praised him for his bravery and gallantry as a soldier, groomed by his alma-mater.
A gathering of past students, parents, students, teachers and well-wishers were present during the ceremony where Major General Vikum Liyanage was awarded a memento in appreciation of his service to the country.
Major General Vikum Liyanage in his brief address to the occasion as the Chief Guest said that the military life nurtured him in such a way that he is capable of facing any challenge in life. He also thanked the teachers and the school for grooming him to be a productive citizen during good school days and added that he would be ever grateful to all his mentors.
