The Sri Lanka Air Force aircraft (C-130) that carried the first Sri Lankan contingent of Army, Navy, Air Force troops and medical consultants to the earthquake-struck Nepal on Saturday (25), returned to the island this afternoon (28) around 2.50 p.m. with 42 members of the under 14 Sri Lanka Football team and their coaches, teachers, medical officers, parents and assistants who were in Nepal to compete in a football tournament.
Air Marshal K.A Gunatilleke, Commander of the Air Force was at the SLAF Base at Katunayake to receive the flight, its crew and the passengers since it was the first time in the SLAF history that an Air Force craft with emergency supplies, flew to a foreign nation with a contingent and returned with another stranded group of Sri Lankans, including a few university students.
Squadron Leader, V.G.P Mahanama and Assistant Pilot Wing Commander, D.K.M Krishantha, despite torrential rains and inclement weather conditions, succeeded in landing the C-130 in Nepal, making it to be a first among three foreign nations, to have reached Nepal with humanitarian assistance and relief personnel.
