94 Northern Sportsmen with Army Personnel Learn More About Tug of War

A group of 94 sportsmen, belonging to civil sports clubs in Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Mannar, Vavuniya and Mullaittivu districts recently joined hands with Army tug of war teams for conduct of a tug of war training workshop, held separately at 'Nelum Piyasa' auditorium and the 9 Sri Lanka Signal Corps Headquarters playground in Kilinochchi.

The initiative, taken by the General Officer Commanding, 57 Division, Major General Jagath Gunawardena was organized under the close supervision of Colonel Janaka Ranasinghe, Brigade Commander, 573 Brigade.

All under command Battalions of the 57 Division and members of the Civil Security Department joined the workshop which talked of different techniques of the game and its fair play.

Colonel Janaka Ranasinghe, Chairman, Tug of War Federation in Sri Lanka (TWFSL), Mr W Christy Fernando, Secretary, TWFSL and Mr Sajith Jayalal, Director, National Institute of Sports Science (NISS) delivered separate talks on different aspects of the game and educated the attendees with focus on new rules, standards, international importance, fair-play and techniques and guided the attendees in practical sessions.

Major General Jagath Gunawardena, General Officer Commanding, 57 Division graced the inaugural occasion as the Chief Guest.

The aim of this programme was aimed to promote goodwill, reconciliation and harmony among civilians and military personnel.
