He was speaking at a ceremony to inaugurate the resettlement of over 2,120 people of 551 families in their original homes in the Musali DS division in Mannar yesterday (9) under the resettlement of displaced civilians phase II.
Rajapaksa said the Government provides all infrastructure facilities to the area before these civilians are resettled in their original homes.
“The construction of Aravi Aru bridge across the Malwatu Oya will be completed within two weeks and work on Sangapitiya bridge is also in progress, he said.
He said the Government has already resettled over 97 percent of people who were displaced by terrorist atrocities in the East and the balance would be resettled soon. The Sri Lanka Navy assisted in providing insfrastructure facilities to the area and we expect their assistance in the future too , he said.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s main objective is to resettle all those who were displaced by terrorist atrocities in the North and the East and create an environment where people of all communities could live in harmony, he said.
He said the Government took only 44 days to resettle over 40,000 displaced civilians in Muttur. Over 90 percent civilians in the Eastern Province was resettled within nine months in the Eastern Province, he said.
“We seek the support of every institution to develop the Northern Province .
Resettlement and Relief Services Minister Rishad Badiudeen said the Government is involved in the process of resettling displaced civilians in their original homes on a par with international standards after booby traps and mines are removed from the area. “We will provide dry rations and kitchen utensils to these civilains and grant compensation to repair their houses, he said.
Social Services and Social Welfare Minister Douglas Devananda, Ministers Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan, P. Chandrasekeran and Deputy Ministers Sachinthanandan, and W.B. Ekanayake were also present.
