232 Brigade troops, deployed in Thoppigala area under 23 Division responded to the occasion and rescued civilians, trapped in floods in and around Kiran lagoon after immediately providing Army boats.
Torrential rains in Batticaloa district caused heavy damages to civil property in Kiran and cut off all possibilities of movement for civilians in the Kiran lagoon area. As the situation aggravated, those civilians ran short of food stocks, drinking water, medicine and all other requirements since no transport was available.
Army troops providing their boats for facilitation of civil movements back and forth from the lagoon area to the mainland enabled sick civilians as well as the feeble to seek medical treatment and attend to the needs in town areas as they wished.
Since the areas were submerged in water, Army troops have been providing those marooned civilians with cooked meals and drinking water for the last ten days while taking special care of the feeble, the old and the children who are unable to attend schools.
On the instructions of the 23 Division Commander in Batticaloa, the 232 Brigade Commander, Colonel S.N Waduge has taken steps in this direction. 8 SLNG troops are still engaged in this humanitarian role as of Wednesday (8) morning, though rains have dwindled.
