Two platoons of 7 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) troops of the 563 Brigade of the 56 Division of the Security Force HQ-Wanni, based in Kokkeliya rose to the occasion and repaired the burst Uthukkulam tank bund in less than eight hours preventing a major disaster that could damage a vast patch of cultivations and remote villages on Friday (13).
Due to heavy rains that fell in the past couple of days, water level in the said tank reached spill levels and caused the sudden burst of the bund of about 15 ft in length, posing a grave threat to about 74 acres of cultivated fields and vegetable-growing chenas in low-lying areas. Officials in the Nedunkerni Agrarian Services Department in Vediveittakallu GN Division on being alert to the tank bund burst turned to the troops seeking their immediate assistance for repairs by averting a major disaster in the area.
On the guidelines and instructions of the Commander of the Security Forces-Wanni and the General Officer Commanding 56 Infantry Division, two platoons of troops of the 563 Brigade commanded by Colonel Panduka Perera, together with the Civil Affairs Officer in the 56 Infantry Division, Lieutenant Colonel W.K.A.S Priyanthalal, Civil Affairs Officer 563 Brigade, Lieutenant Colonel M.A.C.P Marasinghe and the Commanding Officer, 7 Battalion Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Major B.W.S.S.T Peiris participated in the repair work, supported by a group of farmers and civilians in the area.
The Vavuniya District Secretary and the General Officer Commanding, 56 Division Major General Wasantha de Abrew showed up at the affected location and inquired into the needs of the troops as repair work was in full swing.
