A project to plant mangroves adjoining Nanthikadal lagoon in Mullaittivu was launched by troops of the 68 Infantry Division of the Security Force Headquarters - Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) on Saturday (10) to coincide with the ‘World Ocean Day’.
A gathering of Army Officers and Other Ranks, state officials, environmentalists and civilians joined hands with the Army for planting of those mangroves in the aforesaid area which retains water for the entire region.
Major General M.K Jayawardena RSP VSV USP ndu, Commander, Security Forces - Mullaittivu gave directions and the project was closely supervised by Major General S Kasturimudali RSP ndc psc, General Officer Commanding, 68 Division and Commanding Officers of different Units.
A group of 150 civilians, largely the fishing community, resident in Mullivaikkal area voluntarily came forward and planted mangroves in the area.
